Road traffic accident in pets

Date: 05 Jan 2024
By: admin

Road traffic accidents (RTAs) are a common cause of pet injury and can sometimes be fatal. These accidents can occur when pets are hit by cars while crossing the road or when riding in a vehicle involved in an accident.

RTAs can result in serious injuries or fatalities for pets, especially if they are hit by a fast-moving vehicle. Common injuries resulting from RTAs in pets include broken bones, cuts and abrasions, internal injuries, and head injuries. In severe cases, RTAs can result in death.

My pet has been hit by a car, what should I do?

If your pet is involved in an RTA, it is essential to seek veterinary care as soon as possible. Even if your pet seems fine, they may have internal injuries that are not immediately apparent. A veterinarian can thoroughly examine and provide any necessary treatment to help ensure a full recovery.

How can I prevent a road traffic accident from happening to my pet?

There are several steps pet owners can take to reduce the risk of RTAs:

  • Keep pets on a leash when walking near roads to prevent them from running into traffic
  • Make sure pets wear identification tags with up-to-date contact information in case they become lost or injured
  • Keep cats indoors or in an enclosed outdoor area to prevent them from wandering into traffic

When driving with pets, make sure they are properly secured in a carrier or harness to prevent them from escaping or being injured in the event of an accident.
